Tick, Tick… Boom!

Pure Euphoria That Embraces Love

See It Or Skip It: See It

Imagine walking inside from a freezing winter night. You're cold as ice and you hear the dryer stop. You take out a blanket with a sensational and indescribable warmth, you wrap yourself in it and you just feel the love. This feeling of pure euphoria is what Tick, Tick… Boom! What is it all about?

At its core, it’s really about love whether that be love for your craft, love for your friends, or love for your dreams. Andrew Garfield who is just the most beautiful angel on earth shines so brightly and so tenderly in his passionate portrayal as Broadway Composer Jonathan Larson in the weeks leading up to his 30th birthday in the early 1990s. Garfield plays Larson like an adorable alarm clock that can’t stop ticking. He has so much drive, so much ambition, and so much love to share with the world.

Making it to the top requires enormous sacrifice and there are personal struggles that are dealt with. Larson begins to worry that time is running out in achieving his dreams but time is not just one thing. Some have more of it than others. Larson’s friend Michael (The Boys In The Band’s Robin de Jesus) is diagnosed with aids adding to Larson’s complicated relationship with time as many of his theater friends are suffering the same fate. Larson’s girlfriend Susan (Alexandra Shipp) is in a different place than Larson and knows that despite their love for each other, they’re not meant to be.

We all go through so many obstacles and so many stages in life that life itself feels like a musical. We never know just when we may burst into song. Fortunately for audiences, Angel Andrew always knows and as we come to find out, it’s most of the time. His presence will always put a smile on your face.

Garfield is an acclaimed film star but Tick, Tick… Boom! Really shows his love of theater and how his love for it is in his blood. Tick, Tick… Boom! Is not a cautionary tale about what little time we have and a warning to embrace it but rather a celebration of life when it’s good. To hold onto our passions for dear life and embrace feelings of warmth and comfort in those we love and live by their positive examples. Tick, Tick… Boom! Also has exquisite cinematography and an overall positivity that’s never sappy and always sincere. It will make you smile the moment it begins and that smile will stay on your face long after it’s over.
